What SIC code would you think would apply to either venture or both ?

Sadly, I regret to inform you there isn't an SIC for Records, Business
Records, or Records Management.

It's something that is needed for a number of reasons, but it's an arduous
process to get one assigned. And it takes an application from a
"professional body representing an industry" to make it happen, so in our
case, it would take an ARMA or ICRM, or some similar body to push this
forward.

I raised this issue with ARMA's Director OF Professional Resources about 3-4
years ago and pressed pretty hard, having done all of the initial legwork
with the US Census Bureau to make it happen... defined the "industry" and
the "products", who they "served" and how broadly they were used. They
agreed that it was definitely an unidentified "commodity": in the then SIC
structure (now known as NAICS) and that if the volume was as wide spread as
I indicated it was, it SHOULD have its own code.

Apparently, they only assign new codes once every few (it may be 5?) years,
and they need a fully documented request from the industry seeking a
classification to consider it.

In light of the efforts underway on the RIM Competencies project, I raised
the issue with ARMA's Education Department and ED again recently, but have
yet to receive a response on the request.

Maybe more of us need to voice an opinion to ARMA on the topic?

Larry
