To be more précised in my question:

If you, as a records manager, are tasked by your organization to manage a virtual or component document as a record, would you:
1.  Allow no additional editing of the base (parent)document
2.  Allow no additional editing of the component document
3.  Capture the locked down version of the base document and all components
Or
1.  Capture the content of the base document and management it as a record
2.  While allowing continued editing of component document.
