Records that are comprised of mulitple documents should, as a general guidelines, be scheduled together. One of the primary drivers behind retention schedule is to be able to demonstrate that the "record" which may have several underlying documents was either retained for a set period of time or disposed off all together. As an example if there is a HR issue and an organization is asked to produce the employee file - it is very likely that the recprd request will be considered unfulfilled if all records pertaining to the employee are produced (assuming that the retention schedule is in effect and is within the retention periods).

Attempting to split a record into multiple documents runs a greater risk of making mistakes, of accidentally detroying part of a record and more over introduces needless complexity in storing and managing records. Consider the case of offsite storage - if different files withing a record have varying retention period , each file would have to marked separately, scheduled separately and disposed off separately.

While there may be business reasons to do so, as a general guideline, most components of a single record should be scheduled together

Thanks
