The Vatican Registers begin in the 9th century. The complete
unbroken series begins with Innocent the III in 1198. There is a
separate series of registers for each office of the Pope's
Curia. Initially, they contained unabridged transcriptions of the
records issued with data about the time of the issuing, the
authentication measures taken, and the list of the signatures. Later
on, the unabridged transcription was substituted by regesta, a
summary of the record indicating dates, persons, actions, properties
or titles the record relates to, etc. Initially the registers of
each office were by type of records and later they became strictly
chronological. The registry system was implemented in every place
that was reached by the Catholic Church. However, similar registers
were produced in China since the same time. The Imperial Chinese
Registers also contained similar information about the records.
There are several volumes written on the subject if you like to know more.
