SharePoint supports a large number of file formats and indexes and most of the common file formats. In reality it is possible to store just about anything on SharePoint (of course limited by the max file size)

For proprietary formats it is possible to install the appropriate iFilter(s) or create your own using the iFilter SDK interface to create a filter to extract information so that the text and properties can be included in the index by the Indexing Server.
