Um, LinkedIn had an IPO last week. They weren't sold to anyone other than their new shareholders.

The issue, however, is something that people need awareness of. I am gradually scaling back what I make available on social network sites (and to whom). As someone who periodically gets involved in employee investigations, I know that the first places we look are LinkedIn and Facebook when we're trying to understand what someone might be up to. And if the good guys are looking, the bad guys are looking as well. Shortly after I started my present job, I received what looked to be an email from the company Credit Union. The email asked me for some personal information. That was all well and good... except that I didn't have a Credit Union account. I was clearly being spear-phished and it was good enough to have bit me if I had an account. I didn't do a lot of advertising that I had changed jobs, so it was clear to me that someone out there had seen my LinkedIn change.

An article in InfoWorld today discusses "Whaling" and "harpooning" which are terms to describe phishing attacks against executives (leveraging the term "whale" used in Vegas casinos to describe high-rollers). The article is here: http://www.infoworld.com/d/security/how-stop-your-executives-being-harpooned-946
