Michael,

Numerous software products provide the ability to apply an additional encrypted digital signature value that is maintained OUTSIDE of the encrypted content.  This additional digital signature is typically kept in a database record.  This additional key is used to insure content has not been modified.  Each time the data value is retrieved the digital signature is re-computed and compared against the value maintained in the database record to insure the validity  of the source data.  One such product that does this is Digitech's PaperVision Enterprise platform but there are many others.

I would like to know more about managing hash values as pertains to document authenticity and integrity, as well. Is this a electronic discovery best practice? What tools are used to this end?
