Temperatures in San Antonio, 9/14/11
MAXIMUM 99R 344 PM
MINIMUM 74 527 AM
AVERAGE 87
The "R" indicates it was rising at 344pm, so the temperature in a closed car
would be substantially higher.
On seemingly mild days, an enclosed car can be deadly. In a Stanford
University study, when it was 72 degrees outside, a car’s internal
temperature climbed to 116 degrees within one hour. When it was 80 degrees
outside, the temperature inside a car rose to 99 degrees in 10 minutes and
109 degrees in 20 minutes.
Magnetic tape needs to be maintained at constant humidity and temperature
levels to avoid degradation... the article said this move was happening to
comply with the contract for what were presumably Federal records. If this
is true, 36CFR 1236.28 states storage media is to be kept at 62-68 degrees F
and 35-45% humidity.
So... HEY!! it may not matter, they may have all been destroyed anyway!!
