Replies so far have been correct from the standpoint of the owner of the
thing designed and built. But if it happened to be designed by a
registered architect, there is a different perspective from the
architectural firm that designed the thing. Architects tend to want to
differentiate between "as-builts" and "record drawings." They consider
as-builts to be marked up drawings from the contractors showing, as others
have pointed out, changes from the design to the actual construction.
These, again, are prepared by the contractor. If asked to by contract, the
architectural firm will then create "Record Drawings," which incorporate
the contractor's markups into the architect's drawings, and usually have a
stamp or watermark labeling them as Record Drawings with the disclaimer
that the architect is not responsible for any inaccuracies because "these
drawings were generated using information received from others..."
