Good Morning,

Here we require all adult and minor charts to be retained separately to account for the differences in retention. Here in Washington State, adult charts for health matters must be retained for 8 years after the last contact, so they are boxed and retained by that date--usually broken down by year. Minors must have their files retained until they reach a certain age, or so many years after age 18, so their files are retained by birthdate. This does require that they be retained in separate systems of records, but avoids the otherwise inevitable confusion in requiring records to be sorted at the time of destruction--a much more cumbersome process since it means physically sorting every box.

Hello, My company acquired another company that has locations in states that require minor patient charts to be retained longer than adult patient charts
