About RM job titles:
I’m pursuing a career in Records Management after getting my MLIS in 2012. In
my job search, I see jobs requiring just a high school diploma (Records
Associate, Records Clerk, Records Technician), and jobs requiring many
years’ specific experience in records management (Records Manager, Records
Retention Specialist, Senior Records Assistant, etc.), with very few
positions in between.
For those intermediate positions, I have seen Records Analyst, and Records
Representative. I saw an opening for a Records Management Assistant, but
there was no Records Manager on staff, so it was in reality a RM without
the title or compensation.
My current job has Records Coordinators, but they're within the various
departments, with other responsibilities besides RM. I suspect they’re not
on a RM career path.
I’d love some feedback from this listserve on how your departments are
staffed, and what job titles I might watch for. How does someone get the
experience and knowledge to be a Records Manager, what are some of the
potential stepping stones?
At the moment, I’m working part-time at the City of Los Angeles Records
Center, *and *part-time at UCLA, archivally processing the institutional
records of the business school. I got both jobs through networking, and
hope that networking can link me to my next, full-time position. I've got
the training from these two jobs and my MLIS education, and a solid
foundation of problem-solving, organizational skills, and brilliant ideas
from my earlier career in the film industry.
I'd love to hear what positions and job titles I can watch for. And if you
hear/know of intermediate-level records management work opportunities in
the Los Angeles area (I’m near Burbank), I’d be delighted to hear about
them.
Thanks in advance for the feedback!
