> Subject: Electronic Records - Book Project

I did not see a Chapter about vaulting the electronic records in a listed and labeled vault with precise environmental conditions to avoid cycling of the media, magnetic shielding to protect the media from various threatening fields, and an access control system to protect the records from arson, sabotage and terrorism. A trustworthy system must protect from any and all risks.

As time becomes one of the threats, all of the above become a greater concern.

The IT designers keep designing systems which run faster and hotter and they thus increase the risks. As they increase the density even more assets are lost in each event.

Europe and South America utilize Server Vaults to protect the processing environment or sometimes a compartmented jukebox or silo environment whereas in the U.S. companies rely on their back up tapes stored offsite.

But as the offsite storage centers become larger and larger, then one has to wonder whether they really protect the media inside those facilities. Since there is no push from the records management side and IT does not even recognize that there is such a thing as electronic records, a big gap exists.
