> I head a small records storage company in Georgia (the country, not the state). We are quickly outgrowing the facility that we are currently operating, so we are considering our options for the future. One of those options would be to build a new facility from scratch.

> Of course we will engage a local firm for the design and construction, but since this will be the first purpose-built facility in the country, I would like to get some outside input/information. I am familiar with some of the PRISM guidelines, US National Archives requirements, and other guidelines, but I would be interested in getting my hands on some actual blueprints /construction plans of newly-built records storage facilities.

It would be helpful to know how many boxes you have in storage now; and, what the next volume stage you are heading to?

It also depends on how secure you want your facility to be? Some records centers follow the guidelines of NFPA 232 as it was intended back in 2001 and use divider walls at every 250,000 cu. ft. The big storage companies used their clout to change to a 40,000 sq. ft. with unlimited height. That means 1,200,000 cu. ft. of box records in a compartment.

Oftentimes, small companies divide their business into box storage, climate controlled storage and media vault. I could provide some examples if you narrow down your parameters. If you wish to take this discussion off line, you have my email address below.

The NARA guidelines do a nice job on box storage and the overall security of records storage.
