Dear Tammy,
I think it's great that you're trying to make students aware of these alternative careers but I feel like I ought to put out there that as a recent (July) MLS grad that it seems as though a lot of people go to library school with a fantasy job in mind.
I hope your bulletin board finds its audience but I hope you won't be discouraged if you don't have much luck. It doesn't seem to matter how great the job is, if you're not in the "cool" museum or library, people have a tendency to turn up their noses (not to mention, keep chasing the "librarian" job title).

Yes, this is it. THIS!
Lindsay you have made my day. This is something I can use to put together a bulletin board that can really catch students' eyes.
Anyone else?

Tammy,
My own job title is Regulatory Compliance Analyst and the HR description isn't any more exciting. However, they could have included the following to describe what I do:
treasure hunter - searches for records that are 50-75 years old, opens "mystery" boxes
puzzle solver - meets multiple dead ends but doesn't stop
3 year-old learner- asks why? why? why? why? why? to understand business processes
database builder - understands how to develop relational databases in order to speak IT
secret keeper - keeps safe proprietary or classified information and litigation matters
juggler - balances requirements, implementation and compliance
auditor - verifies and measures effectiveness of policies and processes
legalese interpreter - decodes (translates) federal regulations, industry standards
foreign policy analyst- understands global requirements and processes
teacher - guides co-workers in how to manage information
speaker - comfortably advises all levels of employees - entry level to CIO to lawyer
witness - possibly subpoenaed to testify in court
architect - develops structures for organizing information
organizer - keeps track of MULTIPLE projects and open tasks, provide status updates
boxer - defends from people that don't like the policies/process
negotiator - diffuses conflict
software tester - tests process requirements in multiple applications
designer - designs solutions for co-workers to use applications
politician - influences people to your cause, compromises and picks your battles, knows when to not talk
advertiser - develops and rolls-out media campaigns
cartographer - map out data locations and diagram data flow
While my official job description isn't exciting, the content and products we're managing certainly are!

Subject: EXTERNAL: Students and ARMA
Hi everyone,
I had a meeting with our UW-SLIS department director on how to best get more student interaction in ARMA (and of course ARMA-Madison). She suggested we do a bulletin board of jobs that SLIS students can apply for that are not of the usual academic/special libraries, archives, and government entities. She is interested in pointing out to students that there are other ways to work in the Information Field - aka corporate entities, both for- and non-profit, utilities, etc. that may be more challenging, offer more pay or better utilize their skills.
So I have taken a look at what is out there and it isn't easy to come up with some exciting, dare I say it - sexy - RIM/RM/IM/IG jobs out there that might make a student stop and say "Hey, I can see myself doing this!". Plus, I am just one person trying to wade through tons of information....so my thought was to turn to the experts - the listserv. I thought maybe our collective brains could come up with some interesting job descriptions and/or openings that I can use to create an old school bulletin board.
BTW - I did an listserv archive search for "exciting" and "sexy" but I will keep those results to myself.
Thank you so much in advance!
