Heidi,

Iıve administered contracts for both on-site and off-site shredding, and
there are pros and cons with each of them. The biggest issue for on-site
shredding had to do with providing adequate space in which the shredding
truck could park. At that time, our contract covered 11 different office
locations, many of which were in downtown business districts of major
metropolitan areas. This proved very challenging when the shredding truck
would arrive. There were times when the driver was simply unable to park
anywhere, and would have to call and say theyıd come back another day.

NAID certified vendors that provide off-site shredding should be willing
to accommodate audits of their shredding operations to your organization's
standards and requirements. If those standards are being met, off-site
shredding is a good way to avoid parking problems, if that is an issue for
your location(s).

As Lee Nemchek pointed out, the choice on whether to require witnessed,
on-site shredding is a policy decision that should be made by your
leadership. Shredding companies may promise services without necessarily
warning you of some of the potential limitations. The logistical risks
and challenges associated with on-site shredding should be included in the
considerations when your organization makes its decision.

Just one womanıs opinion.
