Hi Mark, I am pretty sure the ARMA/Forrester Survey (recently released) asked that question. I think the trend was towards IT (I know my RIM Department has been under IT in 3/4 organizations for which I have worked). In the newest issue of Information Management, there is a write up on the survey, and a blurb that I think speaks directly to your question. The actual ARMA/Forrester survey might cost to acquire (I'm not sure about that). However, if you have a resource to their past surveys, you might be able to identify a trend(s).
I think other surveys and studies have asked similar questions, but I can't think of specific ones off the top of my head. AIIM may have some info on that as well.
Good luck! The move to the IT Department makes a lot of sense, but it can be a strange journey at times.
Best wishes,
- Brett
