Does anyone have experience using multiple policy tags to manage email retention using Microsoft Exchange Server? What worked well and what didn't?

It seems fairly common for a company to use a default policy - like 1 year or 90 days for the inbox/sent/deleted items. I haven't read many experiences about implementing multiple time-based policies on the Exchange Server.
