If you have done your due diligence to determine the content, and still cannot access the materials, the media is nothing more than one more piece of clutter..  In the business world, retaining such materials can put your company at risk.  In a legal matter, you may be required to produce the materials on the media.  Remember, you cannot show that the materials are not probative to the matter.  From experience, this can be a very expensive and painful process.

It may also be illegal if destruction of the required by EU retention requirements.  A number of their retention requirements require both retention for a specified timeframe and destruction of the record upon expiration of the retention period.  

Remember, "Just-in-Case" is not a reason to retain records.   The rule applies to both paper documents and unreadable media
