Please join the ARMA NOVA and Metro Maryland Chapters of ARMA and the
National Capitol Chapter of AIIM for a private lecture and tour of The Fred
W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington and a Reception
at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant immediately following. The Library,
located on the grounds of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, broadens the
vision of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association beyond the preservation of
George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate, and seeks to extend the education
of Washington’s life, achievements, and character – to the entire world.

The Library event begins with a lecture in the Rubenstein Lecture Hall
(within the Library facility) and ends with a private tour of the personal
collection of the First President and Lady of the United States, George and
Martha Washington.
The National Library is a 45,000-square foot facility safeguarding
Washington’s books and manuscripts, approximately 1,500 additional
18th-century books, as well as thousands of important 19th-century
newspapers, manuscripts, and documents. It also serves as a scholarly
retreat, creates educational outreach programs, and provides seminars and
training programs with a special focus on Washington’s leadership. The
Library emphasizes educational outreach, touching the lives of students,
teachers, and scholars across the nation.

Join Mark Santangelo, Chief Librarian and Archivist, and Rebecca Baird,
Project Archivist, as they share their experiences as the library’s first
Chief Librarian and Archivist/Project Archivist. They will discuss how they
develop the collection, manage staff and stakeholders, and provide access
and services to facilitate and promote the collection’s use.

The Reception at the Mount Vernon Inn immediately follows.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Mark Santangelo, Chief Librarian and Archivist
Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington, Mt.
Vernon, Virginia

Mark Santangelo serves as the Chief Librarian and Archivist for the newest
presidential library, the George Washington Library. The library is located
adjacent to the historical George Washington’s Mt. Vernon, and is resource
for scholars, students, and all those interested in George Washington,
colonial America, and the Revolutionary and founding eras.

Mark has been George Washington's Mount Vernon Chief Librarian and Archivist
since 2012 and oversaw the building project for the new Washington
Presidential Library, which opened in the Fall of 2013. In this role, he is
responsible for developing the collection, managing staff, and providing
access and services to facilitate and promote the collection’s use.

Join Mark as he discusses the Library’s outreach – building relationships
with the community they serve – through programs, events, tours, and social
media. Mark will also lead a tour of the unique collection, including a
discussion on the way the library classifies Archives, Special Collections,
and Records Management.
Mark holds a Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) from Rutgers
University and a Masters of Theology (Th.M.) from Princeton University. His
previous positions include twelve years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as
the Museum Librarian in charge of the Onassis Library and antiquities
libraries as well as five years at the Princeton University Firestone
Library serving in the General Reference and Humanities Department.

Join Mark Santangelo and Rebecca Baird for a discussion of the unique
intersection of historical preservation, Records Management, and the
communities they serve.
