MANKATO — As Minnesota lawmakers prepare to debate how long local
governments should retain emails in the interest of transparency, area
counties vary widely in their retention policies.
In Le Sueur County, emails disappear after 30 days unless specific action
is taken to retain particular messages. In Nicollet County, email records
aren't automatically purged until a year has passed.
The issue gained prominence after the sheriff's office in the state's most
populous county implemented a policy of deleting emails after 30 days.
