The signature of Alexander Hamilton, a busy 18th-century lawyer, is there
in black ink on a roll of parchment paper, along with that of steamboat
magnate Robert Fulton, and stacks of lawsuits by creditors demanding
payment from the cash-strapped family of "Moby-Dick" author Herman
Melville, who lived in Albany and Lansingburgh.

They are among more than 2,000 boxes of state court records from 1680 to
1847 that weighed many tons and were shipped over the past two weeks in
five large moving trucks to the State Archives in Albany from a New York
City courthouse. They had been well maintained by staff of the New York
State Unified Court System, but with limited access for researchers and
poor environmental controls.
