Sharon, it's not just a matter of which box vendor to choose: it's also a matter of the box design.

For example, we store vendor payment vouchers which are loaded "wall-to-wall" in standard 1.2 CF boxes (no folders), and the weight is much greater than the usual office files. So we've purchased triple-wall boxes solely for use with these records.

Also, if these records are intended to be stored for a VERY long time (i.e., more than 50 years) and are intrinsically valuable, you might consider two other factors: the storage environment -- which, in most ordinary facilities is not climate-controlled in any way -- and the use of boxes made of materials considered "archival".

With respect to the storage environment, a good reference is NISO TR01-1995 "Environmental Guidelines for the Storage of Paper Records" National Information Standards Organization (NISO) http://www.niso.org/publications/tr/tr01.pdf.

With respect to the box materials, you might check out "Specifications for Housing Enclosures for Archival Records" (2015), U.S. National Archives, https://www.archives.gov/preservation/storage/specs-housing-exhibition-2015-current.html. It covers boxes and other, related, storage materials.

Additional sources of information may be found on the Library of Congress page titled "Care, Handling, and Storage of Works on Paper" at the URL https://www.loc.gov/preservation/care/paper.html and the National Park Service "Conserve O Grams" at the URL https://www.nps.gov/museum/publications/conserveogram/cons_toc.html.

Best regards,

Fred
