Good question Hugh, perhaps the silence was just a reluctance of others to
show their cards ;) I've heard the term most among IT folks, we use it in
our shop every day, although I don't often see it abbreviated like that. I
suppose the Software as a Service and Internet of Things branding is
spinning off to other acronyms now.

Frank, I agree that the concept of a Source Of Truth is relative and not
absolute. I like how you say it is normally "deemed to have the *highest*
levels of accuracy, quality, and consistency" and that the application of
this honour is dependent on function/*context*. Funny that Source and
System seem interchangeable in this acronym. I also think it bears some
resemblance to the concept "System of Record" that has been used in IM
shops for more years (which in turn bears a resemblance to the concept of
Office of Primary Responsibility/Interest as well).

To wax more philosophic for a moment, it does seem to be in the nature of
data to replicate itself. When humans were handling bits of info we made
copies and took notes and stamped it out to many pieces of paper. When
machines handle it they too make copies and stamp it out to many storage
locations (often for only a momentary hop between servers or
applications). Perhaps in the case of machines this tendency to replicate
is only due to the habits and limitations of their human creators and the
trend will shrink as time goes on. Devs normally lack the project scope to
add a 'nice to have' like a clean up job when they're asked to invent an
automated process. But only time will tell. Alternately perhaps the trend
of replicating data could be like organizational structures which seem to
go through cycles of centralizing and decentralizing as generational trends
spin that old wheel of time around.

Thanks for the interesting/thought provoking thread!

Bruce
