Jessica, in addition to the other comments you've received on this topic, I prefer using onsite shredding services primarily because the shredding can be witnessed. At one company I worked for our director of auditing (or someone from her staff) would occasionally witness onsite shredding, and she always asked a lot of questions. Same for general counsel's office. In addition, I or someone from our office services (in my absence) team would always witness onsite shredding.

Like Elizabeth's horror story, I have one also, where--back in a previous RM life, we were reviewing olds inactive boxes of records one of our NC facilities and ordered a large number of shred bin from our [then] service provider. We used a service provider that did their shredding offsite. So, you can imagine our surprise when some of the shred bins we received were not empty--sensitive, personal and confidential documents belonging to other service provider clients were still inside! Though when we immediately contacted the service provider and they came out right away to empty them, this left a very bad taste in my mouth. So, shortly after that we started using vendors that would come onsite to shred at some of our field cleanup projects.

Another time when we were doing an RFP for shredding services and visiting potential vendor sites, we noticed that the shredding area in one vendor's warehouse was right next to what we were told was a box storage staging area (boxes were on pallets waiting to be processed and shelved) , with only an aisle way separating the two sides. I could only hope that those workers knew what side was what, but I was left dumbfounded and confused. Needless to say they did not get our business.

For these and other reasons, I'm a firm believer in onsite shredding services though it may cost more.

Respectfully.
Earl
