Join photographic materials conservator Kim Du Boise for Understanding
Photographic & Graphic Arts Materials. This course introduces the
various non-paper supports that contain both positive and negative
images from the dawn of photography through the 20th C. The need for a
stable support led to photographs being made on metal, glass, and
cellulose-based & polyester film. Each was developed for a specific type
of photography process, or for the development of new materials at hand.
The most commonly recognized and long-lived supports are the film-based
image processes. All of these items require different approaches and
materials for their proper care and storage.
Using the evolution of photography and printing media timelines, the
participants learn the characteristics & appearance to help identify the
photographic products. Each process is introduced with its particular
ageing process, inherent vice in materials, and deterioration
appearances to guide the decision-making process of preservation care &
access or display.
