Here's the link to the program information: http://slisweb.sjsu.edu/mara/index.htm

And here's the course description for the class requiring application to the exams. The degree does require work experience as well.

MARA 292. Professional Certification
Through consultation with advisor, preparation exercises, information and registration guidance toward successful completion and submission (required) of ICRM and/or ACA exams for professional certification(s) in archives and records administration. Passing score for exam(s) not required for credit. Not repeatable.
Prerequisites: MARA 200, 202, 204, plus six advanced courses. Good academic standing.

MARA 294. Professional Experience - Internships
Internship under professional supervision in a selected archives or records center. The internship site must meet criteria outlined in the MARA internship guidelines and be approved by the internship coordinator. Repeatable.
Prerequisite: MARA 200, 202, 204, plus six advanced courses. Good academic standing.

If I read this correctly, the 292 class only requires that you submit an application --- not that you are accepted (although that may be semantics as well).

I still wonder, though, if I have the experience and knowledge to pass the CRM without this program, what value is the program? Will being able to list a Master's Degree on my resume add any additional value over and above having the CRM? Or is this program mostly for those just starting out who have not gone through the school of hard-knocks.

I agree Nolene. I too am glad to see formalized education in RIM offered and accessible.

Some of the verbiage in the "San Jose Solution" caught my eye. I have some questions for San Jose St.

I wonder if San Jose State Univ. would care to more closely define and explain the " ...pass the certifying examinations of ARMA International ...?" It might be simply semantics ... Are they referring to the CRM credential hosted and offered by the Institute of Certified Records Managers (ICRM)?

I would also question the "Applying for one or both of the exams is required under one of the courses." If they are referencing the Certified Records Manager certification credential, which is ARMA's official RIM certification credential by contract with the ICRM; no educational achievement in and of itself will qualify a potential candidate to sit for the exams. The ICRM requires a number of years of broad-based professional RIM experience before accepting a person as a candidate.

I am so glad to see formalized education on Records Management accessible to everyone regardless of geography. I think that being able to get a degree in the discipline will enhance the standing of our profession. In looking over the information, this caught my eye:

	The San José Solution

To offer a totally online Master's degree run in the cohort model. Cohorts will take 2 courses a semester and graduate in just under three years. Students will be prepared to take and pass the certifying examinations of ARMA International and the Academy of Certified Archivists.

Applying for one or both of the exams is required under one of the courses. However, passing the certification exam is not required to get course credit.

The cost of this program is $18,877 (plus exam costs) and takes three years. I understand there is value to just having a Masters Degree, but I was wondering for those who already have or could attain a CRM (or CA) without this program, is there a value to taking it since the certification seems to be the goal?
