first I would go to the ICRM website, download the application form and fill
it out. have it reviewed by a current CRM (I've done this in the past)
http://www.icrm.org

Note that education requirements have changed. If you have a Masters degree
you can now qualify to sit for the exam with only 2 years work experience.
(don't ask me my opinion of this)

The exams are not easy, but if you have been performing records management
duties over the years and have been progressing upwards in your career with
ever increasing responsiblities and experience you should be able to pass
Parts 1 through 5. Part 6 takes more effort especially if you are not used
to writing case studies.

The CRM is a baseline. It doesn't say that a person with it is better than
one without it. That is determined by how well the individuals do it. And
yes there are employers out there who don't know what it means or what it
takes to get the designation. Once you achieve the designation it takes a
lot of effort to keep it via the 100 contact hours per 5 year cycle ie
continuing education in the profession.
