Mary--

Architectural drawings have been traditionally measure in number of
drawings. There are other ways to measure, but this seems most common
especially in archival settings. Gary's questions are very good and get to
the point of what is it the archivist seeks to accomplish. If measuring is
needed to determine space and shelving requirements, weight loads and the
like, other issues need to be addressed more than number of total
drawings. Depending how they are stored (rolled, flat), type of support
(paper, trace, vellum, Mylar, microfilm, etc) you should be able to
approximate volumes at least with a visual scan -get to know how much 100
rolled Mylar sheets look like, how many flat paper drawings fit in a
drawer, etc. Then just extrapolate the total. If the archivist has
accession records, there can be clues there too. Laura Tatum, the
architectural archivist at Yale University would be a good resource. If
you'd like an intro, let me know.

Historical Architecture Drawing Collection

I have been contacted by an Archivist and asked for some assistance in
determining a way to measure the collection of Architecture Drawings.
These are historical Architecture Drawings and will be maintained perm. in

the paper. Does anyone have a formula/method for determining this without

putting the documents on a scale and weighing them?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
