David,

A little background before my answer. My company is a large manufacturer
with the majority of its facilities within a 75 mile radius. There are 40
some odd remote locations spread out across the nation.

"When you have them pull the boxes for purging, do you then go to their
site and ascertain that they have pulled the proper boxes?"

We do not go to the site to confirm destruction. We will do an annual
physical and quarterly cycle counts.

Do you insist on being present for the shredding or do you entrust your
vendor and trust their certificate of destruction as proof that they
have followed your directions?

Again due to the lack of resources we rely on destruction certificates.

"Horror Story" After the initial inventories we have found one or two
boxes that should have been destroyed or should have been kept. That's
when we implemented cycle counts and different marking procedures for the
destruction process.

Director of Corporate Compliance
