Just piping up on this discussion, in particular Jesse Wilkins comment
below (snipped below) about being "within my rights to ask for
electronic as *that* is the native format."

<snip>

...for those few who cannot comply with public records laws to the
degree

demanded by the gadfly community...</snip> To some extent this matters -
the

example you provide about Word vs. HTML, etc. I'm with you. But if I
were to

ask for information that only exists in email and you offer me paper, I

think I'm within my rights to ask for electronic as *that* is the native

format. ...

<snip>

Having responded to various "gadflies" on information requests,
providing electronic is not a feasible option for my company because of
the metadata attached to the electronic format. We have staff who work
from home using their home ISP etc, and the metadata can have sufficient
information to enable a knowledgeable requestor to identify where that
staff member's home computer is etc. In Alberta, Canada, we have an
obligation to protect staff's personal information - and that includes
personal information embedded in metadata. We do that by producing only
hard copies of electronic records.

I'm away next week (June 23 to 27), so if anyone wants to chat with me
one-on-one, I'll have to get back to you after I return on June 30.

Thanks!
