I suggest she have a look at the Society of American Archivists webpage,
at www.archivists.org, and then look at the domains of knowledge that
are considered to be expected of a professional archivist.  These cross
the boundaries of "what type of archivist" she might be interested in
becoming, and is more akin to getting an M.D. if you are planning to
practice medicine.  You do the M.D. first, then figure out your
specialty training.  

With a history degree her options will be greater in public
archives--apparently her chosen field, but a degree in Library and
Information Sciences is also preferred for Manuscript and Personal
Papers by some academic institutions.  This will require research on her
part so that she does not short change herself.
