I agree with Peter - there are potential advantages in files that have a built in
terminus. The only safe way to communicate with someone these days
without the information existing beyond the communication is to meet in
person and talk. That used to be easy to do, but today so much personal,
business, and government communication and information is delivered
electronically, and suddenly there's ESI to manage (even a lot of phone
communication).
I know there are companies that market temporary email (see
http://bit.ly/ammdpo for a list), and I'm a little surprised that it hasn't caught
on in corporate circles (someone correct me if I'm wrong). IBM is extending
the idea to other filetypes, a natural extension I think.
That said, there's no way to prevent an email from persisting - I can still take
a picture of my computer screen.
