Welcome to the RM listserv. You have made a wise choice in
subscribing/joining. If that is Leeds as in UK, welcome (a bit late) to the
States. I have enjoyed time in Leeds while working nearby in Copley a
couple of years ago. I too stumbled into records management some years ago
from a different direction (urban planning) but that is a different story.

1. Use any contacts you have in the academic setting to connect with
potential employers
2. Use a variety of on-line employment search tools. Use consolidators
like indeed.com, as well as just looking at career sites of employer's that
you may think would be good to work for
3. Entry level positions can be anything from working in a rm warehouse to
data entry to clerical work in a firm's file room. If you are a good
problem solver you might consider work as a consultant, starting as a in and
entry level position such as a business analyst
4. Core skills would include the ability to work and communicate with
people at all levels of an organization, computer skills including database,
spreadsheet, documents, etc. The more technical skills the better. In
addition, the ability to see the big picture (say information governance -
beyond just plain rm) is also important, as is the ability to be able to
understand and communicate with people in the organization's IT shop.
Another skill is the ability to solve process problems, understanding and
documenting work flows (business processes).
5. I believe opportunities exist in all over from working to help a
particular organization from within as well as from an external position
such as a consultant or member of a service vendor community

Enjoy the weekend and good luck with your search

Subject: [RM] Allow me to introduce myself, and ask a few questions...

Hello RM Listserv members, and Happy New Year!

I am Raymond Rozman, a current student at Indiana University SLIS in his
last semester before graduation. I have a previous M.A. in Medieval Studies
from Leeds University, but as the academic job market is not a sunny place
right now, Library Science was the way to go. I am currently taking courses
in pursuit of a Rare Books Specialization, but most of my coursework is now
geared towards finding jobs in the records management industry; I happened
upon the discipline after a fortuitous internship experience this past
summer, and I have been hotly pursuing opportunities ever since.

I am gearing up for the job search, and have a few questions I would like to
pose to the listserv in addition to my introduction. Finding quality
work placement is particularly difficult for young, inexperienced folks
these days, so any and all advice - or leads - you wish to offer me will be
greatly appreciated and remembered. I hope to use the time I have in my
final semester to develop myself and my skills to set me out on a path for
growth.

What sort of job opportunities are there in Records Management at the entry
level? What opportunities are there for advancement in the field? Where
should I be looking?

What would you identify as core skills for beginning records workers? What
skills and qualifications demand employers' attention and set them apart
from other applicants?

What problems or opportunities exist in the discipline, i.e., where can
problem solving be put to good use?

Does anyone know of jobs currently available for people in my situation? Is
anyone interested in seeing a resume?

Regards,
