This being stated, it seems to me that your company has a legitimate business need to keep the records or the work product based on those records for a longer retention than is currently policy.  Since business need is one of the four values in determining record retention, it should not be difficult to revise the retention schedule to take this need into account.  

(and I am qualified to discuss this aspect because I have been a RIM professional for 45 years)
