There is also an amazing book about this man and his struggle to save the manuscripts of Timbuktu.  It is called "The Bad Ass Librarians of Timbuktu and their race to save the world's most precious manuscripts."  It's available on Amazon.com for $17.88 USD for a hardcover.  I've read it and it is very good.
