Rob,

My opinion (and only mine): Storage vendors already own the shrink-wrapping equipment (for stabilizing stacks of boxes on pallets for shipment, which is a good thing), and their marketing teams have come up with another way to use what they already own to create a new income stream: "Let's tell customers that their boxes will be safer in case a sprinkler goes off, and we can charge them an extra fee!"  If you subsequently want the vendor to retrieve a file from inside a shrink-wrapped box, I wouldn't be surprised to discover that there is an additional fee to remove the shrink-wrapping.

I agree with you that good air circulation is important to the long-term safety of paper records - wrapping them in plastic could promote mold growth.

I wish I wasn't so cynical about the motives of storage companies.  I didn't start out that way but have had to develop a suspicious mind to protect against their ever-expanding strategies to increase their income at the expense of good customer service.
