Those USGS maps sorta still exist. Many outdoor/hiking stores carry these
and there are statewide compilations called Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer.
Unfortunately they don't have every state and they are hard to read (at
least the elevation and as I get older and older...). However, Delorme
makes a number of different mapping software applications that can do maps
for you and that you can hook up your GPS navigation thingie to. The paper
Atlas runs around $20 and the software is around $100.
