ARMA blocks rooms for the conference. So when you sign up online for
the conference your room is part of that block that is how they know
you are part of the conference.

I would suspect that the door was not fully shut. Most if not all
hotel rooms automatically lock and only one of the credit card type
keys will open the door. In a year's worth of business travel I've yet
to see a real key.
