A review of the decision rationale for RIM and other submissions suggests
that more focused measurable job categories may merit recognition.

I offer the following as a suggestion: Initiate a task force as the ARMA HQ
level. Survey job titles within the US RIM community, both corporate and
Government. I think the task force will discover job titles corresponding
to typical US organizational charts:

- Enterprise or Corporate Records Manager
- Division Records Manager
- Department Records Manager
- Program Records Manager

I think too some analysis of PeopleSoft HR and other automated HR systems
may have value. It will require more bandwidth and research than I now
have time for to determine methodology. Perhaps other in the community more
familiar with such packages may have ideas.

After data gathering, task force should normalize titles based upon survey
results and submit recommendation for each category (which are
sub-categories of the RIM title), with recommendation submissions including
rationale and perhaps survey methodology and results. If the association
can measure, then there's no excuse for the Government not being able to do
the same. Further, the Government RIM segment may already have its own GS
series description, and, if so, I am sure there's knowledge there that's
applicable to task force efforts, and, if not, survey results may add value
to those in the Government community that desire same.

I just wonder about how Archivist positions are treated too.

Best Regards,

Tom Dale

When I was in the private sector a few years ago I gave myself the title of
Internal RM Consultant. The IRS recognizes a title of Records Management
Consulting Services - 541611. Change your title.....
Frankly, I've always looked upon the Records Manager in the private sector
as internal consultants. Think about it, you may have the title of "Records
Manager" with the responsibility, but how many of you actually have the
authority.

Collaboration of ARMA, ICRM, NIRMA, and AIIM (perhaps a few others)
should be the direction. Present a united front.

John,

Thanks for the explanation. I just visited the site and see ARMA's
efforts
will be ongoing. Is there something the records management community
can do
to assist ARMA in this effort?

Pat
