They might want to consider following guidance by the HHS Office of
Civil Rights, which recommends either degaussing or destroying media
that contains protected health information (PHI)
(http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/enforcement/examples/disposalfaqs.pdf).
 That's what we'll most likely follow in my company.

I searched but couldn't find anything in the article that discussed a
time frame of how long the provider must hold on to the records before
they can dispose of them.  I suspect they want to get rid of the
records as soon as possible.  Will be interesting to see how this all
plays out.  The Governator has essentially said he won't sign any more
bills until the Legislature passes a budget.  Based on what is going
on in SacTown these days we might be waiting for a while.
