I am still unclear why tax dollars are spent to basically subsidize a private
sector endeavor. I do understand that in some cases it may be the law that
agencies will need to compile and/or redact information requested. But I
would still question if that is a wise public policy.
For example if I wanted to know what percentage of graduates of the
Unviersity of Minnesota have a surname that ends in a vowel for the time
period 1910-2010 could I expect that someone would compile this information
for me. If not then does that mean you differentiate requests either by the
amount of labor involved or by the assumed serious purpose of the requestor.
