an early mnemonic used by the telcoms was to name areas. for example in
Dallas we had EMerson and LAkewood as to examples. my home number was
EM-x-xxxx
eventually that got changed to just a numeric where EM = 36
I remember key numbers but when people have several numbers (work, home,
cell) it is far easier to find them in the directory
