Snapping is exactly what we do, even though our recycling center has a redactor that will "spit out" none paper materials. If a CD accidentally goes through the center, < dangerous/explosive situation >, not a problem - the center uses water to break down the paper, turning it to mush in seconds. As for floppy's, we simply cut them up with scissors. It's in MHO that the situation is not as complicated as some would like to make it :o)

Is a vendor always necessary? Does a CD really need to be shredded, or
can it just be snapped in half? Seems to me that it is easier to destroy
information on a CD, etc., because with paper you have to shred or
otherwise destroy every sheet, check, whatever; but with digital media
you only have to render the storage device unreadable. I once attended a
digital preservation seminar where the presenter scratched a pen down
the info side of a CD and declared the CD permanently unreadable. So if
you have so few CD's, could you consider just breaking them yourself and
not bother with a vendor or a shredder? Oh sure, maybe the FBI can dig a
broken CD out of a lake and have their experts read parts of it, but is
that going to happen to your CD's? Define the destruction/security
measures needed for your organization with a written policy, and then
see if you have the wherewithal to accomplish it yourself without a lot
of added expense.
There is though, the issue of certificates of destruction. Vendors will
issue those; perhaps you can generate them internally if you're
destroying your media yourself.
A steel mill in my former hometown used to toss its records into the
open hearth furnace when their retention expired. I don't know if they
got a certificate of destruction from the foreman -- maybe from the
stripper crane operator. Surely the ladle craneman was too busy...

paper without having to.....pulverize them. The reason you get push
back
from a vendor is because it cuts in on their back end profit for having
to
sort out the non-paper material before the shredded stuff is sold on the
commodities market. I would continue to use the same vendor and just
toss
in the digital media in with the paper. If they catch you, play dumb.
I would definitely not purchase an additional piece of equipment just
for
cd's and/or floppies.
