My answer is related to this part:
"Teh question of maintaining software that is not the product of the org can be addressed by any reverse compatibility issue"
 
I learnt that when one buys software, the real thing that important is License.
In case that everything gone, Microsoft ( let say the software is from Microsoft) will restore that software in case it was registered. It is important to know for Emergency planning.
 
Maybe my information is outdated, but this what I learnt about 10 years ago.
