A rare copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence may have been
taken from the Alamo grounds, police said Thursday, describing what
might be a clever swap of the document. The possible theft could
renew questions about the safety of artifacts kept at the Alamo, as
plans progress to display a priceless relic there next year. A source
with the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, which now provides daily
operations at the shrine under a state contract, said the DRT could be
downplaying the incident, afraid it will jeopardize a planned exhibit
of the famed “victory or death” letter by William Barret Travis.
