It would be great if there were simple answers like this that could be used by all, but unfortunately for most of us, we have to consider the content as the record, not the means of conveyance to us, as the actual "problem".  Then too we have to deal with all these pesky laws, statutes and regulations that government is constantly dreaming up.

Good for you that you can simply ignore all that, plus decades of records management best practices and principals, and are able to codify that as a company policy!

Sergey,  We have a similar policy change in the works  via an electronic communication unified retention policy.  This will standardize one retention policy for all electronic communication (not just email)  except for certain types of content (these are spelled out in the policy).   Once approved the corporate retention schedule will be updated accordingly.  We wanted something what would cover IM, Texts, Email and any type of electronic communication that technology may bring us.
