If the documents are vital you need to do a few things.
1-make a duplicate
2-store duplicate somewhere else(a vault is good if geographically separated).
3-Alternate is to digitize and store in a secure environment
4-I don't work in a lawfirm but I see no reason not to give the client a copy.

Subject: Vital Records

I'm looking for best practices in the retention of vital records.  Specifically, estate documents prepared by a law firm.  We are debating whether or not the firm should retain the vital records in an off-site vault or if the original documents should be given to the client.  Thoughts?
