Extremely well said!

Thank you so very much Hilary, I will definitely look for the appropriate time to use these thoughts.

Many thanks!
David

David,

I've been thinking about this since I saw your post last evening. WhileI understand that you're trying to be obliging and supportive of yoursupervisors, I'd love to see you tell them that starting a recordsmanagement program needs specialized skills and knowledge, and theyREALLY need to somehow find the money to hire someone with those talents and the right experience.

Constructing a brand new system may be the hardest part, since a strong and appropriate foundation/structure is the most crucial. Once a system is in place, changing it can be harder than starting fresh.

When we agree to do a task we're not really skilled for, and enable ourcompany to refrain from hiring someone experienced in that field, we not only risk the potential for mistakes, problems and possible disaster, we denigrateour profession by demonstrating that someone really doesn't need any special skills to be a records manager.

I have been working with the records of a local renowned business school, and am steadily amazed at how, for decades, the professors, deans, alumni, etc. supported the profession. They expected, and received, alumni to support upcoming students and graduates with jobs, /paid internships, etc. A MBA wouldn't accept OR suggest not hiring a colleague with the right skills for the job. They’d say, “Sure, I know some people that would be really good for this. I can have them call you.” They take care of each other.
