Vast amounts of confidential information was released to the public as a
result of the recent Sony Pictures data breach. But it didn’t have to be
so. There are steps Sony could have taken before the breach which would
have saved them even after the successful breach. All their confidential
information could have been protected by applying a new approach—even if
hackers were successful in gaining access. It’s called Information
Governance (IG).

The data breach was massive: Not only were unreleased films exposed, but
also strategic marketing plans, detailed internal cost models, industry
salary comparisons, termination/severance information, confidential email
messages, email addresses and passwords, and even personally identifiable
information (PII), including the social security numbers, birthdates,
salaries, and performance reviews of all 3,800+ employees.
