COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -
Years of history in Van Buren County went up in flames last week despite
the efforts of some 100 firefighters in the freezing cold battling to save
the county's historical records building.
The massive fire sent an alarm to other historical archives around the
state, including the Maury County Records Department.
Historians there said the unarchived records, some dating back to the
1800s, cannot be switched to a digital format because the county has
decided not to fund it.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
